We’ve all seen something in our neighborhood that needs attention – a pothole that keeps getting worse, a missed trash pickup, an overgrown property, a stray animal or a traffic signal that isn’t working. Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing who to contact to get it taken care of.
The good news is that you don’t have to figure out which City department handles every problem before you report it. For most non-emergency concerns in San Antonio, 311 is the best place to start. It gives residents one place to report issues, ask questions and connect with City services.
What Can I Report to 311?
There are a lot of issues you can report through 311, including things you probably see around your neighborhood every day. Some of the most common requests include:
- Potholes and street repairs
- Stray or roaming animals
- Missed garbage collection
- Illegal dumping
- Graffiti
- Overgrown properties
- Sidewalk concerns
- Damaged or missing traffic signs
- Traffic signal problems
- Park maintenance issues
You don’t need to know which department is responsible before making a report. Once your request is submitted, it will be sent to the City department that handles that issue. And don’t assume someone else has already reported it. If you notice a problem in your neighborhood, it’s always worth letting the City know.
There Are Several Ways to Make a Request
You can call 311 within San Antonio or 210-207-6000, submit a service request online, or use the City’s 311SA mobile app. The app can be especially helpful because you can include the location and a photo of the issue and then track your request after it has been submitted.
When you make a report, try to be as specific as possible. Include an address or nearby intersection and a short description of what you’re seeing. A photo can also be helpful when it makes sense. And keep your service request number, you’ll need it if you want to check on the request or follow up later.
What About an Emergency?
It’s important to remember that 311 is for non-emergency City services and information. If there is an immediate threat to life or property, call 911. If you need police assistance for something that is not an emergency, SAPD’s non-emergency number is 210-207-7273.
Knowing the difference helps make sure your call gets to the right place. When in doubt about an immediate safety issue, call 911.
