Looking for Ways to Get Involved?

One of the things I love most about District 3 is the people who call it home. Every day I meet residents who care deeply about their neighborhoods and want to see them thrive. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, supporting a local business, attending a community meeting, or simply reporting a concern, every action makes a difference.

Many people ask, “How can I get more involved?” The good news is that making an impact doesn’t require holding public office or volunteering every weekend. Sometimes the smallest actions lead to meaningful change.

Here are five simple ways you can help make our neighborhoods even stronger.

1. Attend Community Meetings

One of the easiest ways to stay informed and make your voice heard is by attending community meetings. Throughout the year, the City hosts neighborhood meetings, public information sessions, and open houses where residents can learn about upcoming projects, ask questions, and provide feedback before decisions are made.

The City’s Neighborhood & Housing Services Department also maintains a calendar of upcoming meetings, events, and engagement opportunities. Whether you’re interested in housing, neighborhood improvements, or community development, it’s a great place to stay connected and get involved.

Even attending one or two meetings each year can help you better understand what’s happening in your neighborhood and ensure your voice is part of the conversation.

I also encourage you to follow my office for information about District 3 meetings, town halls, and community events. I hope to see you there.

2. Share Your Voice Through SASpeakUp

Your opinion matters, and the City has made it easier than ever to participate.

SASpeakUp is San Antonio’s online public engagement platform, where residents can learn about upcoming projects, participate in surveys, provide feedback, and register to speak at City Council meetings. Whether the City is planning improvements to a park, discussing transportation projects, or seeking community input on future initiatives, SASpeakUp helps ensure residents have a seat at the table.

Not everyone can attend meetings in person, and that’s okay. Online engagement gives more people the opportunity to share their ideas on their own schedule.

The more voices we hear, the better decisions we can make together.

3. Report Neighborhood Concerns

One of the fastest ways to improve your neighborhood is by reporting issues when you see them.

Potholes, graffiti, damaged streetlights, illegal dumping, overgrown lots, missed garbage collection, and broken street signs are all examples of concerns that can often be addressed through the City’s 311 system.

You can submit requests by calling 311, visiting the City’s website, or using the 311SA mobile app, which allows you to quickly report issues, upload photos, track the status of your request, and receive updates directly on your phone.

Reporting problems not only helps resolve individual issues, it also helps City departments identify patterns and prioritize future improvements.

4. Volunteer in Your Community

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways to give back while meeting neighbors who share your passion for making San Antonio a better place. Whether you have a few hours a month or can commit to an ongoing opportunity, many local organizations welcome volunteers of all ages and skill levels.

Here are a few organizations making a difference right here in our community:

  • Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio (311 Probandt St.) – Help build affordable homes, assist at Habitat Home Centers, provide meals for volunteers, or support special events. No construction experience is required for many volunteer opportunities.
  • San Antonio Food Bank Volunteer Program (5200 Historic Old Hwy. 90 W.) – Volunteers can sort donated food, pack emergency food boxes, assist with distributions, or work at the Food Bank’s Urban Farm. Individual, family, and group volunteer opportunities are available year-round.
  • Family Service Presa Community Center (3721 S. Presa St.) – Support programs that strengthen families on San Antonio’s South Side through community events, senior activities, educational programs, and neighborhood initiatives.

Every hour you volunteer helps strengthen our community. Whether you’re building a home, helping feed families, or supporting neighborhood programs, your time can make a lasting difference. Consider inviting a friend, family member, or coworker; you may be surprised by how rewarding it is to serve together.

5. Stay Connected

One of the easiest ways to stay engaged is simply by staying informed.

Following updates from my office and the City helps you learn about upcoming community meetings, neighborhood events, construction updates, public safety information, grant opportunities, and City resources that may benefit you or your family.

It also allows you to share information with friends, family, and neighbors who may not know about available programs or important deadlines. An informed community is an empowered community.

Every Voice Matters

Building stronger neighborhoods is a team effort. It happens when residents stay engaged, ask questions, volunteer their time, support one another, and speak up about the issues that matter most.

As your Councilwoman, I’m committed to listening, advocating for our community, and working alongside residents to make District 3 the best it can be. But the best ideas don’t always come from City Hall, they come from the people who live, work, and raise their families here every day.

Thank you for being an active part of our community. I look forward to continuing to work alongside you as we build an even brighter future for District 3.
